About Chiang Mai

The north’s largest city, 750 kilometers   from Bangkok , Chiang Mai is over 700 years old. The old walled city with its moats contains some magnificent temples and lively communities. Doi Suthep mountain looms over the town, and the highly-revered temple at its peak offers superb views of the surrounding country side.

Chiang Mai province is one of the mountainous land with many high peaks, which always reflects its natural beauty as a magnet to all tourists. The charm of this land includes not only the fresh and cold air, but also the fields of wild flowers and unique hill tribes’ traditional way of life.

Therefore, Chiang Mai is one of the top adventure destinations of Thailand and Southeast Asia . We can find a variety of adventure type activities here including mountain hiking, hill tribe trekking, bamboo rafting, kayaking and elephant riding. This is the ideal place for outdoor education and adventure trips.

Accommodation

Accommodation is in Mae Kok Outdoor River Village Student Center , located on the bank of Mae Kok River .  With accommodation for 120 in three 6 roomed villas - with each bedroom having two bathrooms, each villa having its own meeting and TV room, a student pool, social club, 6 route climbing wall, indoor ropes course, archery course, a large teambuilding area and a student only restaurant, it’s an ideal location for students.

Meals will be buffet style in the student restaurant.  There will be a selection of Thai food and Western food available.

Outdoor Activities

An important element of all trips is the development of skills of teamwork, co-operation, mutual respect, mutual support and leadership. Many of the outdoor activities implicitly contain elements which help in the development of these skills. However, the centre also has a ‘team-building park’ where students undertake a whole range of mental-physical challenges which test them and their ability to successfully carry out a variety of tasks. Instructors are on hand to introduce, guide, occasionally cajole and to review. Such activities can occupy a half or a full day.

The centre offers a wide range of activities. Many are based in the centre itself such as climbing and archery, others nearby, canoeing, biking and rafting, with some, such as trekking and overnight camps in the nearby mountains. They have been designed to challenge students, yet all with elements of fun so that all students will enjoy themselves.

All activities have been risk-assessed and are led by experienced instructors and where necessary with well-qualified and experienced English-speaking Thai guides

Archery

The centre has a 12 metre “short range” which is perfect for groups of all ages and abilities. Set inside a The Adventure Club it provides cover from the elements while welcoming any breeze that may come along. Sessions may also be conducted in the evening with whole range floodlit.

Instructors hold the “Grand National Archery Society” Leader award and deliver structured sessions for 1 – 3 hours. The lessons involve the basics of how to shoot an arrow, aiming off, arrow collection, scoring as well as many fun games to improve your accuracy.

Camping and Hilltribe Village Stays

The chance to camp out overnight – in the mountains or on a beach in the middle of the Maekok River - is often the first time that visiting students have had such an experience. They set up their own tent, cook their food, play games and sit round a campfire watching the stars until bedtime.

It is also possible to spend a night or two in a hill tribe village, staying with a family. Groups carrying out community projects in schools in hill tribe villages will often stay in the village and this experience certainly increases their understanding of and empathy with, life as a hill tribe villager. We provide sleeping bags, mattresses, pillows and mosquito nets. Some groups are happy to eat with the families, otherwise, we send food for the evening meal and breakfast.

Canoeing

A typical canoe session would take roughly 2 hours. Starting at the resort, we leisurely canoe down the Maekok river taking in the sights of the surrounding mountains finishing the journey at the foot of “Sob Fang Hill”. From here we walk the 642 steps through the peaceful bamboo forest up the ancient staircase to Wat Sob Fang, an 800 year old Buddhist temple, set on the top of the hill from where you can take in the views of the orange groves below.

Longer canoe journeys of two to three days can also be arranged, depending on the needs and abilities of the group.

Climbing and Bouldering Wall

Our 12 metre climbing wall caters for beginner’s right up to experienced climbers.

It has features including a slab, vertical and overhanging routes and offers the ability to bridge for those much needed rests. The different routes are color coded, and offer grades from easy to hard. Coupled with the adjacent bouldering wall for getting those forearms really “pumped” it makes for a fun and rewarding activity. The wall allows four students to be climbing and thus there is little sitting around for the groups.

Our instructors hold the British S.P.A climbing qualification, and all our equipment is CE (Certificate Europe) rated.

There is the opportunity for more advanced of climbing on some challenging limestone outcrops in the area.

Confidence Course

Set over a muddy pool of rain water is the confidence course, which is a series of obstacles designed to challenge each participants balance and skill.

Can you cross the beam and turn 360º without losing your balance?

Perhaps the vine traverse will throw you off or maybe the monkey rings will slip through your fingers! One thing is certain; only the committed stay dry!

This makes for an enjoyable and entertaining evening activity.

High Ropes Course

The indoor high ropes course has 11 different sections, with a variety of different challenges to test the skills and dexterity of the participants.

A harness and to slings ensures the safety of the participants. This is a great test of dexterity, balance, determination and courage.

Jungle Survival

Located in a banana plantation is the setting for the “Jungle Survival” course.

Using the scenario of being lost in the jungle the teams must survive one night by building themselves a shelter, cooking a meal, and escaping the head-hunters with a bow and arrow.

The only equipment available is a machete, rope, bamboo and banana leaves!

The 3 hour session begins by teaching the correct technique of how to use a machete, before moving onto knot tying and finishing with how to make a fire and cook a meal of rice, noodles and eggs using only bamboo for your implements.

Mountain Biking

The Doi Pa Hom Pok National park has some amazing mountain biking offering beautiful views as well as some serious downhill. A biking route navigating the rural back roads from Pha Hom Pok ( Thailand ’s 2nd highest mountain) to the resort is popular, particularly with the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme.

Closer to the centre we can offer biking along the dirt trails and roads that labyrinth the agricultural land which is all flat, so is suitable for all ages and abilities. A longer 3 hour excursion will take you through the chilli fields and around the foot of “Wat Sob Fang” hill which provides the opportunity for introducing some non serious downhill action, before heading back along the road parallel to the river.

Raft Building

Set on the banks of the scenic Maekok River , bordering the neighbouring country of Burma is the location for our Raft Building adventure. Here we use the scenario of being hunted down by mercenaries, our only chance of escape being down river..

The teams must build themselves a raft using bamboo poles, rope and rubber rings and navigate it down the river for an hour or so to the beaching point at Wat Pradhat Sob Fang

This activity is great as a team building exercise as well as an excellent way of getting people on and or in the water without the complexity of skill acquisition associated with kayak/canoe sessions.

Team Challenges

An excellent activity designed to get participants to work together to achieve a particular goal. Our team building games are designed with the emphasis on being fun. This way the group members do not even realize that they are in fact learning very important group skills; such as communication, delegation, leadership and trust etc….

The session is based around a scenario about saving the planet from an “alien doomsday machine”, by running the session this way, the clients feel like they are actually working towards achieving something as apposed to just do team building exercises for apparently no reason!
